Description :
Follow the Ziz Valley from Errachidia down to the old caravan towns of Erfoud and Rissani, on the edge of the Sahara.
Morning: Errachidia – Ziz Valley – Aoufous
We collect you from your hotel in Errachidia and drive south along the Ziz Valley. A panoramic stop above the valley opens onto one of the longest palm groves in Morocco, a green river of date palms running between bare red cliffs. We continue through the village of Aoufous and stop to walk a short stretch of the palm grove and see how the old irrigation channels still feed the gardens.
Midday: Erfoud
Arrival in Erfoud, the town built on fossils. We visit a marble workshop where 350 million year old marine fossils are cut and polished into tables and basins, and you can see the raw blocks arriving from the surrounding hammada. Free time for lunch in town.
Afternoon: Rissani – return to Errachidia
A short drive brings us to Rissani, the old capital of the Tafilalet and the cradle of the reigning Alaouite dynasty. We walk through the covered souk, one of the most authentic in the south, and stop at the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif. Late afternoon we drive back up the Ziz Valley and you are dropped at your hotel in Errachidia.
