Two days from Errachidia to the great dunes of Erg Chebbi, with a camel trek at sunset and a night under the stars in a desert camp.
Day 1: Errachidia – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga
Departure from your hotel in Errachidia in the morning. We drive south along the Ziz Valley with a panoramic stop over the palm grove, then continue to Erfoud for a visit to a fossil marble workshop. After Rissani and its covered souk the landscape opens into flat black hammada, and the first orange crests of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. You arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon, leave your luggage and meet your camels. The caravan climbs into the dunes for about an hour and a half to reach a high crest for sunset. Dinner is served at the camp, followed by Berber drums around the fire and a night in a private tent.
Day 2: Sunrise over Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Errachidia
You are woken early to climb the nearest dune and watch the sun rise over the sand sea. Breakfast at the camp, then the camels bring you back to Merzouga where you can shower. We drive to the village of Khamlia to listen to the Gnaoua music of its community, descendants of Saharan caravans, then head north again through Rissani and the Ziz Valley, arriving in Errachidia in the afternoon.
